The Coming Race book

Book review – The Coming Race by Edward Bulwer-Lytton

I’ve written a new book review that I believe will prompt you to read the actual thing!

I first thought I’d use this book for research purposes, given the Angel Afterlife series I’m working on, but it’s turned out be quite a delightful read. Not that I haven’t stumbled across some useful information to take inspiration from.

Please don’t get me wrong. It’s by no means an easy book to read, as it’s written in an older version of English, similar to that in „The Time Machine” by H. G. Wells, and because it doesn’t have a lot of action and suspense. Yet, the author has put a great deal of in the world-building process. It’s as if he had actually been there, in this fantasy world beneath our feet.

It tells the story of an American engineer who encounters a subterranean race known as the Vril-ya as he descended deep within the recesses of a mine. The nether Earth, as he called it, was a world devoid of sun light, yet it seemed brighter than our own.

The Vril-ya, this human-looking race, although so different than our own, were the subject of the engineer’s reverance and awe. They could inflict a death-dealing blow in an instant due to their skill in using the vril, a highly potent almost magical power, however were also capable of the most tender acts of compassion and love.

This previously unknown world was lit by lamps fueled by the vril, and their society was built on concepts of fairness, equality, a social and political construct which eliminated fame, greed, and competition.

The main character mingles with this awe-inspiring race to find out more about their history and civilization. As mentioned before, the world-building was done in great detail. You will be absorbed by the depth of the Vril-ya civilization and the nether world they inhabited. Spice this up with some romance and you have the recipe for a tough but delightful read.

I hope you enjoyed this book review. All that remains is to read the actual book 🙂
